Voter ID: Necessary or Discriminatory?

Voter IDBy Rebekah Rast — You need a proper form of government ID to drive a vehicle, buy alcohol or tobacco products, and even to apply for welfare assistance, so why not require an ID to vote?

That’s the line of thinking of South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who, along with South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, are filing suit against the U.S. Department of Justice, which recently rejected the state’s new Voter ID law, enforcing provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Last May, South Carolina state lawmakers passed a law requiring voters show a valid, state-approved photo ID before they cast a ballot.  But the U.S. Justice Department rejected the law saying it discriminated against minority voters.

But when you need a valid form of government ID in so many other daily situations, how is it discriminatory to ask for one before exercising your right to vote?

States like Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Kansas, Tennessee and, if approved by the Department of Justice, Texas, all have strict photo ID voting laws.  South Carolina hopes to join them.

Supporters of voter ID say it helps to prevent voter fraud.

“Voting in this country is one of our most valuable honors and rights as U.S. citizens,” says Bill Wilson, president of Americans for Limited Government (ALG). “If people lose trust in the voting system then our entire democracy and the framework of our government is lost.  Requiring voters to show a valid ID is an easy step to take that keeps people’s trust in the system.”

On the other hand, many agree with the concerns coming from the U.S. Justice Department that voter ID can lead to discrimination.

When voter ID was passed in Mississippi last year, many felt it was an attack on non-whites.

“Our analysis shows that Mississippi’s voter ID law is another example of a law with a racially discriminatory effect being implemented over minority voters’ strong objections,” Barbara Arnwine, executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, told the Huffington Post. “Seventy-five percent of minorities in the state said no to having to comply with what amounts to a modern-day poll tax in order to exercise their fundamental right to vote.”

Voter ID is a contentious topic that clearly strikes a nerve with those who are adamantly against it as well as those who fully support it, which is likely why many states have no voter ID laws at all.

But despite the arguments for or against voter ID, America’s past does contain allegations and some possible shreds of proof of voter fraud.

One such controversial election was in 1984 in Indiana’s 8th district. The election battle was so tight between Rep. Frank McCloskey (D-IN) and Republican-challenger Rick McIntyre that the results were decided upon in Congress.

After a recount of votes by Indiana’s Secretary of State that ruled McIntyre the winner, the Democratic-controlled House refused to seat either candidate until it conducted its own investigation. With a task force leading the investigation composed of two Democrats and one Republican, McCloskey took his seat in the House where he was claimed the winner by only four votes. Republicans temporarily left the House Chamber in protest.

In another instance, during the 1996 Congressional elections, Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) came under fire of Republicans as she took her place in the House replacing former incumbent Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-CA) in California’s 46th district.

House sources to this day say former Rep. Dornan’s seat was stolen from him.

The House Oversight Committee, then led by Republicans, launched an investigation into the race and found that non-U.S. citizens voted in the election, possibly attributing to Rep. Sanchez’s lead over Dornan.

Speculation still ensues over recent elections such as now Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) winning over former Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) in the 2008 Senate election in Minnesota State. Also, the Washington State governor’s race of 2004 was decided by 133 votes out of 2.8 million cast. Recounting the votes a third time was the ticket for Democrat Christine Gregoire who was declared a winner by a state judge even after losing in two separate recounts against Republican Dino Rossi.

These states that want a strict voter ID law want to protect the rights of voters and the honor of the voting system.  Their objective is not to discriminate.

What happens when citizens lose trust in a nation’s government is they become subjects instead of citizens. In the words of Joseph Stalin: “The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.”

Those words should never ring true in America.

Look back at history when the right to vote was given to land owners.  Showing a legal ID today to vote is the right thing to do.  Those who object are trying to vote fraudulently so shut up, show your ID and only vote 1 time legally.  Stop claiming discrimination so you can cheat the system.

What is so wrong with a proper I.D.  Here in Canada we receive a voter card sent to each
household member.  This must be presented at the polling station along with a proper
photo I.D.  I do not feel my rights have been invaded but rather that it has been protected.
There is no invasion of my personna.

Having to show a government-issued ID to vote is definately discriminatory and would amount to a “pole tax” if it cost to get one.  So the answer is simple- there ought to be NO CHARGE to get a simple government photo ID!  It ought to be one of those services that we have already paid for in our multitudes of daily taxes!

My girlfriend’s mother is 89 and is in a real predicament.  She must present a government-issued photo ID to get her new South Carolina handicapped placard which is now required to have her photo on it (a good idea, but…).  The problem is, she cannot get the ID unless she can show her birth cirtificate.  At the age of 89, she doesn’t even remember what TOWN in Louisiana she was born in (was it Louisiana, anyway?).  Her copy of her birth cirtificate is of course long gone.  So now not only can she not get her handicapped placard, but she can’t vote either.  Maybe now that she is of such a slight mind, she shouldn’t be voting anyway?

However, there are always reports of lots of DEAD people casting votes, so I am all for the photo ID requirement!

You consider that Eric Holder has not honored his oath of
office from the very beginning of his term.
The first thing he did was to make sure there was no prosecution of the
NBPP for voter intimidation even with video to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt
that they were guilty.  Next he and Obama
refuse to uphold the Marriage Act.  Next
he decided to sue one the states (AZ) for their immigration bill.

This is against our Constitution.  In the Constitution Article IV Section 4
    reads:

                   The
United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of
Government, and shall protect each of
them against Invasion : and on Application of the Legislature, or of
the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened), against domestic
    Violence.

In our Constitution Amendment X reads:

The powers not delegated to the
United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved
to the States respectively, or to the
    people.

Eric Holder targeted voter ID law
passed in SC saying it targets minorities because most of them do not have a
photo ID.  We all know if you cash check,
get prescription medicine, enter some business building, rent an apartment, or
house, or  drive, use a credit card, fly,
or most anything in our everyday living we must have a photo ID.  This makes me wonder if Holder does not think
Obama can be re-elected without voter fraud.

So why in the world would you
want to trust this man with overseeing the Internet.  I sincerely hope that S968 does not pass the
    Senate.

Permit me to educate you and anyone else in a similar predicament.
Almost every jurisdiction I have ever been in will GIVE you a FREE ID card  or SELL you one for less than a pack of cigarettes. If you can’t afford that, then voting is the last thing you need to worry about.

Regarding lost birth certificates, you can get a copy at one of the records offices in the state in which she was born. I got a copy of my grandfather’s birth certificate, social security card and draft registration twenty five years after he died at age 77 and I had no idea when where or from whom he was born.

Total cost, including membership in ancestry.com was less than $50.00.
Now, with all due respect, if a person is of “slight mind”, SHOULD they be voting?

I have no issue with showing an ID, it is the key componnent in trying to prevent voter fraud. Otherwise I could vote again using the name of a dead person; especially in areas where the dead vote more regularly then they did while alive!

  • Lomax

Of course voter ID is discriminatory! How in the world is a hard mooching illegal or liberal to manage to vote thirteen times if they have to have a picture ID with their address on it? It makes it real hard for Commiecrats and Nazicrats to get elected. That includes Demicrats as well. If they had to play by the rules they would have no chance at all.

LOL, Gee Nanna what about all the people that already have an ID?? This is not requiring a new photo ID, just a State photo ID I.E. Drivers License, ID Card, Maybe even welfare ID, I’m not sure about the last one because even though I grew up in a poor family, we never took any welfare or food stamps. My folks were much to proud to do so..Not that all that take assistance are not proud, But many are not ashamed of anything..Even getting paid to vote!!

“indelible” means can’t be washed off . Will be stained until the skin sloughs off in a week or two .  ( But , of course , Obama’s Justice is not only demeaning to minorities , it can have no other purpose than to abet voter fraud . )

Also, if no ID is required, not only can illegals vote but a person can go from precinct to precinct and vote many times over and never be caught.  I also believe that they should do away with absentee ballots except for military personnel overseas and Americans living abroad.  There is no excuse for not being able to get to a local voting station, usually they are right in your neighborhood.

I am sick of hearing that  voter ID is discrimantory toward minorities.  We the people are willing to give you the picture ID free, all you have to do is apply for it.  If you can’t show that you are a US Citizen then you should not have a voter ID.  If you need a ride to the polls call either party and I’m sure they will ensure you get a ride, some senior homes bring the polls to the home.  Same with nursing homes.

If you don’t have ID the workers at the Polls will let you vote on paper and have it verified later.

Don’t you have to show some sort of ID to get welfare?  And even some places make you show ID to eat in a soup kitchen, not true here.  I know you have to have it to buy liquor or beer and sometimes even enroll your kids in school.  Passport to go to some countries, and many other things.

I believe I had to show ID to get my Medicare card.
