Waiting for an Anti-Newt

Newt Gingrich in Florida

By David Bozeman — As a political junkie, my biggest wish was always for someone to put elite-media commentators and debate moderators in their place.  Now that Juan Williams and John King have both been savaged by the agile tongue of the great anti-Romney, I solemnly ask — is it too late to take that wish back?

A bold, even audacious conservative statesman is certainly long overdue.  Speaker Newt Gingrich’s outbursts, refreshing at first, now bear the mark of grandstanding, not unlike the proverbial snake oil salesman who has perfected his pitch and finally captured the crowd (and their pocketbooks).  Discourse that was meant to be Reagan-esque now sounds calculated and predictable.

As long as Romney held front-runner status, he constantly wrestled with such charges as “conservative-lite” and, most notably, “flip-flopper.”  Now that the momentum has shifted back to Newt, he should have to, and just as often, defend his tenure at Freddie Mac, his support of President Bush’s prescription drug bill, his own calls for individual health insurance mandates, his frequent claims of man-made global warming and his support of the ultra-liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava in a New York US congressional race over Tea Party favorite Douglas Hoffman.  As a loyal debate viewer, watching Mitt flounder on stage, defending Romney-care, has grown tedious.  We know the deal by now.  It’s your turn in the hot seat, Newt.

Sometime in the late 1990’s, I bought the Speaker’s To Renew America from a local bookstore’s discount bin.  Published in 1995, just after he assumed the House speakership in a Republican landslide, Renew is a good, though generic, conservative blueprint for America in the 20th Century.  It was recently headed for my local charity store for a donation when I decided a quick perusal might be in order, given that Newt may be the only man standing between Obama and a second term.  On Page 36, discussing American military resolve, Gingrich refers to FDR as “probably the greatest president of the 20th Century.”

You read that correctly.  Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  This is big.  This is not some difference in taste or temperament, this is about worldview and a philosophy of leadership and the role of government.  Wouldn’t most conservatives have given Reagan that honor?  Heck, why not Eisenhower? But FDR, one of the leading architects of statism, whose very policies and stranglehold on America’s political psyche Reagan fought much of his life to undo?

FDR?  And then there’s Newt’s notorious affection for another Roosevelt, one of the progressive movement’s leading luminaries, Teddy.

An explanation of his preferences would be far more illuminating than another full-frontal attack on Bain Capital.  Every Republican assumes the Reagan legacy when necessary, but the Gipper proved that leadership entails focus, consistency and a steady hand.  If the former Speaker can wage a general election campaign as successfully as he has recently debated, then the conservative movement may well have found its new statesman.

But now is the time to choose between deed and rhetoric that, though rousing, amounts to little more than the calculated ire of Washington’s most prevalent beast, the walking ego.

From a “what they did to / for the country”, FDR has to rank as the second worst ever, second to Woodrow Wilson.  We will have to wait a little while to see just where Obama falls in that spectrum.  While I hate to make rash judgements, I think Obama will just edge out Carter and follow behind Clinton as the next worst.  If you stop and think about it for a second, we have really had some disgustingly bad Presidents in the past.  And not a one of them was recognized for what they were before being elected.  BUT Newt, FDR is nothing to model ones self after.  This group above is not a group of incompetents so much as just pure EVIL.

Ah, yes – Iran-Contra (oh, does anyone remember, he sold arms to Iran?), “I lied,” “you’ve seen one redwood, you’ve seen them all,” Gorsuch/Watt/Weinberger, 2 marriages (he said that, during his Hollywood times and first marriage, “we never knew who we were going to wake up with”), ”star wars,” falling asleep in cabinet meetings, clearly demented during most of the last years, so he could use the excuse that he “did not remember” with honesty . . . but, a handsome, trained actor who could still speak the lines he was fed.
Such a nice voice . . .yes, I loved Death Valley Days, too, but that’s not what I expect in a President. Reagan was such a travesty. Some have forgotten; probably, most people never even really looked at the time. They just liked the movie. If we ever do get over our infatuation with this fool, with the perspective of history, we will look back on this era with shame . . . naming things in his memory before he was even dead! This is history as a grade B movie, covering over the most tawdry escapades with well delivered lines. It’s incredible that the right wing is now fawning over Reagan – who raised taxes frequently, wasn’t faithful to his first wife, and loved big government, while calling it the problem. His legacy: The Bush dynasty. Hypocrisy in spades. Now we want . . . what? The anti-Romney, the anti-Newt, Santorum in your bedroom calling the cops if you use a contraceptive, Ron Paul with a plan suited for 1789 . . . what are we really looking for? Another grade B actor? Does anyone actually have any positive ideas for the problems we face with health care, the environment, global warming, the ascendancy of China, the Arab-Israeli conflict? I don’t see any. All we seem to have, here, is griping about Carter, Clinton, the visceral, racist hatred of Obama, and the yearning for Death Valley Days to play again. We really have run aground, haven’t we? Really, folks, it’s time to grow up; turn off the TV.

jwastewaters piled higher and deeper wrote: “racist hatred of Obama”

… only a racist and a bigot with no compassion for the suffering of his fellow man would use a sequence of lies and ad-hom attacks against his victims.

You’re posts are typical of a troll: Misinformed, lies, and insults.

As for TV – obviously you are the one watching or reading the nonsense. Don’t you have any first hand knowledge?

Obama has committed all the sins of every administration back to
Roosevelt. If he has not out done FDR, it is certainly for lacking an
evil empire to assist him in selling out hundreds of millions of souls.

Freedom is a rare gift, rarely granted to a civilization.

Throwing it away is no joking matter.

Unfortunately, David makes an excellent point: The Grinch is no conservative champion.

He cannot win election: The Left will skewer him – if not for his record as Speaker, then on his affairs and sexual activities during the Clinton years. They will run test ads – and if necessary create plausible attacks to eliminate him.

Grinch will carry all of the states still voting for the land of the free – but so what? In the unlikely event he wins, he will be faced with unending battles against any responsible decisions. Grinch will not be able to withstand the pressure and will govern as Bush did – one iota short of everything the Left wants and very little for the home team (if anything).

Further, with the outrageous economic situation, Grinch may just manage to tick some of the big players off leading to a collapse without even taking any names or perp walking anyone with his hand in the cookie jar.

O.K. kiddies:  Pick up your toys and go home.  The hour is late and your bedtime is nigh.  Say “good night” to Mr. Paul.  It’s time for the adults to play.  The Children’s Crusade has ended.

Well, Sonata, why don’t you get a copy of Newt’s book and see for yourself what Newt wrote? Do you really think that Mr. Bozeman is fabricating easily checked quotes from a book? Perhaps you are the one who needs to wake up.

Newt is the anti-Newt and his endorsement by Phalen and Cain is the icing on the cake.
