Will Big Bird become America’s new national symbol?

By Rick Manning — The Obama campaign launched an Internet hit campaign using Big Bird to attack Mitt Romney as a result of Romney’s debate claim that he would eliminate funding for the Public Broadcasting System if elected president.

Romney unequivocally declared that the U.S. government was going to have to make some tough choices due to the gigantic budget deficit, and singled out the home of moderator Jim Lehrer’s PBS News Hour saying, “I’m sorry, Jim, I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m going to stop other things. I like PBS, I love Big Bird. Actually like you, too. But I’m not going to — I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for.”

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides partial support for PBS and National Public Radio (NPR), receives about $450 million a year in taxpayer dollars.  But as House Republicans who voted to take the multi-million-dollar earning Big Bird off the public dole discovered he and his movie star pals don’t go down easily.

Congressman Doug Lamborn, in an exclusive 2011 interview with Americans for Limited Government’s Frank McCaffrey pointed out, “Why should taxpayers, when we are running trillion dollar deficits have to pay for something like this that could pay for itself, it doesn’t make any sense at all.”

Yet, two years later the Big Bird subsidy remains.

Team Obama has even given Big Bird his very own campaign ad in an attempt to mock Romney’s nation’s annual trillion-dollar-plus budget deficit.

More than just symbolically, Big Bird has become the major dividing line in the election.

Will America vote to continue spending $3.60 for every $2.50 our nation takes into our treasury unconcerned about how our government covers the bills and unaware that the trillion a year results in devastating our economic growth and overall job creation.

Romney in the debate called the saddling of our children and grandchildren with an insurmountable debt to pay for our luxuries and excesses a “moral issue.”

Perhaps those who believe that Big Bird, Elmo, Kermit and Miss Piggy need a taxpayer subsidy to help with early childhood education missed the “Tickle me Elmo” craze that generated millions of dollars, and they undoubtedly were unaware that Kermit and Miss Piggy went Hollywood a long time ago making millions in the process.

Or, perhaps they haven’t flipped around to the hundreds of channels on their televisions and envisioned the bidding war to bring Big Bird to a privately funded station.

As strange as it might seem, Big Bird just might be the perfect symbol for this election.

Will America behave like grown-ups with an out-of-control budget and start cutting back on  the luxuries in an attempt to bring it somewhat under control, or will they behave like children (or Baby Boomers) who have little regard or comprehension of the consequences of spending a week’s worth of lunch money on Monday because mommy is just going to give them more on Tuesday?

If Team Obama gets its way, Big Bird will remain on the public dole enslaving the generation that watches him today to those who lent America the money to subsidize him.

They way things are going, yes, he will. He could even be elected president. The way this nation has come down in intellect Mickey Mouse could get elected, oh wait, maybe he has.

now we can have a new flag with the starrs replaced by a picture of o and big bird. that would be fair to all the bird brains too.

The “Re-PUNK-licans” are a non-existant party but fail to realize this reality. They do not have the – I’ll be kind – resolve to see that their policies ever get enacted as they always back down, the cowards that they are! All they are ever insistent about is asking for donations! I always reply that it make’s no sense to donate to such a feckless, impotent political party!

So Obama is making “Big Bird” the main theme of his try for another four years ..It figures since he is a PUPPET himself !

  • pduffy 10.10.2012 12:11 PM

Do we really need fascism to keep Big Bird on the air? If there is a market for Big Bird, people will pay for it privately. Government has no role in funding any kind of TV program, it’s not authorized by the constitution. It’s time to make ‘Big Bird’ fly on his own.

I’d rather see people donate to causes than to have the govt “make us” pay for useless stuff. I don’t believe the govt will spend my money better than I can.

What nobody even realizes…is that Sesame Street is highly financially successful–and CAN profitably support itself! And ALSO–Sesame Street has been SCREWING the very musicians that record the music on its “Sesame Workshop” DVDs. They hire the musicians to do the recording and pay then the basic AFM recording scale; then in the CREDITS they switch the names, substituting the musicians’ names with those of their actors! This is so they can beat having to pay the musicians the AFM-agreed-upon “special payments” in the event that the music is lifted and re-used in a secondary or tertiary market like a TV broadcast or movie; or when the DVD sells in excess of the estimated amount, which is what the “special payments” fund is for; to make sure the recording musicians are compensated properly when their work is re-used elsewhere, and most of the time without their knowledge. Sesame Street is always trying to do things ‘under the table’ in spite of their collective bargaining agreements they made with the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) So don’t feel too sorry for them–they have a ‘day of reckoning’ they will face with the AFM on behalf of all the musicians they screwed.

According to the Media Research Center,
the “laundry list of scandals CPB/NPR have been involved in recently is staggering:
Senior NPR executives were caught on camera telling undercover investigators that the Republican Party has been hijacked by fanatical Tea Party Americans who are “xenophobic” and “sort of white, middle America, gun-toting seriously racist.”An NPR producer described in disturbingly graphic detail how she would revel in Rush Limbaugh’s death.NPR host Lisa Simeone was caught acting as a spokeswoman for the radical, anti-American Occupy D.C. group.NPR fired Juan Williams because he dared to voice concern over Islamic terrorism, but happily employs far-left-wing loons who wish death on conservatives or express solidarity with Muslim extremists.” The CEO salaries of these public entities, for 2010, were in the $500,000 – $700,000+ range! Email your House representative and tell her or him to stop voting for taxpayers money for any of these groups. ! They can do without it! Live in Colorado, contact David Lamborn and all of the republican congressional reps. They are Coffman, Tipton, Gardner, Joe Coors for Perlmutter’s district, Degette (D) and Polis (D)

feckless, impotent political party???????sound like you are talking about the demonic-rat’s . Obama fits that bill to a Giant T. We will see who is non-existant next month, won’t we.

  • Karen Clemovich 11.10.2012 9:00 PM

Pbs should not be receiving money from the tax payers through this gov’t. That is the main thing. It has enough money of its own. It is not about Big Bird. It’s about Big Gov’t spending tax payer dollars!

  • Karen Clemovich 11.10.2012 9:03 PM

Obama is using Big Bird to attack Romney….It isn’t going to work. Anyone that really knows about PBS knows what Romney was trying to get across. Big bird will not end if the gov’t stops giving them money…they have enough money to keep on going.

  • daveveselenak 11.10.2012 9:12 PM

Oh, I beg to differ, the demonic-rat’s have got their agenda of destroying America implemented! They are Godless ghouls but they hammer what they want done through and through; unlike the “Re-PUNK-licans that can’t shoot straight! If the GOP weren’t so feckless and impotent, the country wouldn’t be in the shape that it is! When they were in power they were afraid to use it and that is why we are where we are now, in tyranny!
