The Demonization of Liberty

NRD Editor’s Note: This column first appeared at The Daily Caller.

By Bill Wilson — Individuals enlisting in the U.S. Armed Forces must swear an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” But what happens when the only crime perpetrated by the “enemy” is supporting and defending the Constitution?

Such is the dilemma facing future military officers at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point — who are being taught to view freedom-loving Americans as violent, racist terrorists-in-waiting. As part of the federal government’s ongoing jihad against common-sense fiscal conservatism and constitutionally limited government, West Point’s Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) has issued a new report making some dangerously irrational generalizations about the “far-right.”

Entitled “Challengers from the Sidelines: Understanding America’s Violent Far-Right,” the West Point report provides a stunningly one-sided demonization of conservative ideology — and simultaneous embrace of “progressive” liberal thought.

Written by Dr. Arie Perliger, director of terrorism studies at the CTC, the report warns of the rising militancy of so-called “anti-federalists” — or Americans who embrace radical notions like “civil activism, individual freedoms and self-government.” In other words, anyone expressing support for the fundamental democratic ideals upon which our nation was founded could be a terrorist.

According to Perliger, these “anti-federalists” are dangerous because they “espouse strong convictions regarding the federal government, believing it to be corrupt and tyrannical, with a natural tendency to intrude on individuals’ civil and constitutional rights.”

Wait — government isn’t corrupt? And warrantless wiretaps, forced participation in a Social Security Ponzi scheme and Barack Obama’s health insurance mandate aren’t intrusions on our liberties?

Of course they are — but apparently exercising one’s First Amendment freedom to speak out against these assaults on liberty is a one-way ticket to a government watch list. However, advocating vociferously in support of these anti-American policies is completely permissible.

“While liberal worldviews are future- or progressive-oriented, conservative perspectives are more past-oriented, and in general, are interested in preserving the status quo,” the report claims. “The far right represents a more extreme version of conservatism, as its political vision is usually justified by the aspiration to restore or preserve values and practices that are part of the idealized historical heritage of the nation or ethnic community.”

In case those racial undertones were too subtle, Perliger’s report proceeds to put a much finer point on it.

“While far-right groups’ ideology is designed to exclude minorities and foreigners, the liberal-democratic system is designed to emphasize civil rights, minority rights and the balance of power,” he writes.

Translation? “Extreme right wingers” aren’t just terrorists, they’re racist terrorists.

This shameful playing of the race card is nothing new. Who can forget the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s insidious “See Something, Say Something” video — a disgusting bit of race-baiting propaganda which portrayed white men in hoodies as menacing figures intent on attacking African Americans, Asian Americans and Latinos.

Like so many myths propagated by the far left — i.e., “gun control reduces violence,” “tax cuts must be paid for” or “government spending stimulates the economy” — the whole “right-wing radical” myth is easily debunked.

In fact, according to a DHS-funded study released last year by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism, America’s militant left is far more likely to engage in acts of violence than its militant right. According to the report — entitled “Hot Spots of Terrorism and Other Crimes in the United States, 1970-2008” — the overwhelming majority of domestic terrorist attacks in America have been “extreme left-wing” in their ideological origins (364) followed closely by single-issue groups whose ideologies were classified as “other” (337).

By comparison, “extreme right-wing” groups accounted for far fewer (58) attacks.

In other words, it’s not tea partiers we need to watch out for, it’s people like Obama’s terrorist buddy Bill Ayers.

As the Obama administration ramps up its assault on our liberties, we must not forget that these intrusions affect Americans of all creeds and colors. It’s also important to remember that taking a firm stand against these intrusions doesn’t make one a radical, a right-winger or a racist — just an American exercising your right to free speech.

This is why West Point must immediately fire Perliger — and publicly repudiate his reckless statements.

once you take the oath if you ever fired on Americans defending their constitution you would become guilty of treason and subject to the respect and treatment you would deserve

I believe George Washington himself was “anti-federalist”, and so were many of the other founders. At the time the ‘federalists’ were known as ‘Jacobins’, which were really imperialists that wanted strong central control – a monarchy in disguise. Washington was vehemently opposed to the Jacobins, so by the definition of this report, Washington himself would be classified as a “right wing, anti-federal, terrorist”. Seems the tyrant King of England would agree. History is repeating itself.

Then the federal troops that attacked the south in the federalist war of the 1860’s comitted treason, and so did Lincoln. Maybe it’s time to recharacterize the “Civil War”.

  • Since officers are questioned on their willingness to fire on american citizens, this places them in a real bind.

  • All Americans owe their allegance to America and only America. Not to a president not congress nor any group of people.
A soldier or officer has three choices in the face of an unlawful order, first is refuse, stand down and do nothing. Second is to obey and try enforcing the unlawful order and third is to be arrested as a traitor. If they refuse to obey the unlawful order they can stand down without reprisal. if they try to enforce it, even after being informed of their sworn oath to uphold constitutional law, would be taken into custody and charged with treason. If they resist arrest and fire on Americans, then they have declared themselves to be domestic enimies of the constitution and will face the consequences of their treason.

This is America Put your Heart In Or Get Your A(( OUT

  • Already been done. War of Secession. It certainly was not a civil war, the south wanted nothing to do with the north, including DC

  • pduffy

“War of Secession” is much closer to the truth.

  • Mad Mike

Our federal government has been “infultrated by traitors and communists”. They are now trying to brainwash not only our public schools and universities, but now “West Point”! The real danger to america are these commie professors and communist politicians who hire them. All states, (at least those that are still american, not communist), should ban together to resist this “attempted coup d’ tat” of our nation by the democrat party and those who support it. If all out civil war is the only solution left to the two hundred million plus americans who still believe in our constitution, then so be it. Once it starts, we americans, (and I mean every real american including those of all ranks in our military), must immediately, “take the war directly to those traitors in Washington who started it and arrest them for high treason”. All of them.

Bill, if you really believe Social Security is corrupt tyranny, and equate “freedom” with your right to make a buck regardless of the consequences for anyone else, you’re as irresponsible as the author. If you actually read the book, you’ll find that your quotes are taken out of context and, as usual, meant to draw the “red meat” crowd into fury. Why don’t you look at the posts on your “liberty” forums sometime, if you want to see violent right wing views? We have on this very page someone who feels the Civil War was “treason,” and another by Sgt York of the “agree with me or get out of the country” persuasion. Go ahead and stoke the fires of the wing-nuts, Bill, if that’s what you consider to be ethical leadership. That way, thinking people will be disabused of your authority and see you as the destructive ideologue you are.

  • Perliger is a “Professor” from Hebrew University that closely follows in the steps of Soros. He hates his religion (this becomes obvious reading his works) and would turn the whole of the Israeli state over to the muslims. In essence he has no real bona fides to teach any where except were the pro-muslim and anti-Christian or Jewish forces are in power. West Point should not have such radical professors on any subject at any time. But, like with the Secret Service and there problems the government reflects the morals and ethics of those in charge and current leadership in the White House has neither.

  • Sandra Lee Smith

Should, but won’t; those are the “officers” O wants in “his” army and other branches; all the ones being cashiered and otherwise forced out actually believe their oaths have meaning and would stand on them!

  • Sandra Lee Smith

There’s a tee shirt out with the description of right wing extremists; it has the faces of fellows like J Adams, Jefferson and Madison on it!

  • Sandra Lee Smith

Lincoln did a LOT more wrong than just that; it wasn’t Constitutional to block the secession of those states; and much worse!

  • Sandra Lee Smith

Every member of our military has been following unlawful orders for 4 years now; and unlawfully given orders; both of which the UCMJ explicitly states to be a court martial offense. Why would they stop now?? Either they don’t care or don’t know, or both!

What the Blood Hell is WRONG with you West Point??? I think it’s just like the ‘new-breed’ of Cops that are largely being pumped out these days..you know, ‘EVERYONE’S a bad guy ( unless they’re COPS ) & I personally think your freeking Institution- should be INSTITUTIONALIZED!!!

It would have been helpful to provide a link to somebody in authority at the USMA to urge him to fire Prof. Hateful, and to get somebody in there who doesn’t hate the country that he allegedly serves.

  • Brabado

It is widely supposed that, to fulfill their Agenda to destroy/implode/destroy our Great Nation, the always sinister Socialist Machine and its minions – a 24/7 breeding wicket Dragon – have infiltrated every branch of Governement, Armed Forces, Supreme Justice and – guess WHO in the Justice Department, to undermine and destroy our values, our high moral standards, and love for our U.S. consititution and everything it represents i.e, Freedom and Liberty for all.
They greatest ENEMY is the 2nd. Amendment of our U.S. Consitituion because, America will have the resources to defend itself, if and when, there is a dramatic and out control Power Grab, by the current Regime… And folks, they are not kidding or playing games. This bunch is going for broke and WE, are their ultimate target…

  • MilitaryVeteran

Looks like the USMA Commandant needs to have a chat with Dr. Perliger regarding his terminated position at West Point. USMA cadets understand what 1776 was about and the Constitution of the United States. Perliger, apparently, is another refugee from an academic liberal tower . . . The Armed Forces frequently hire academics for various positions in military educational and research institutes – without adequately examining their sentiments towards the Constitution. In fact, past contract activity with Georgetown University, and other American universities, provided American Marxists in Army classrooms. Not all American academics should be trusted.

Blind trust in the US Government is . . . . un-American. Read the “Federalist Papers” and also remember this . . .

“We must confine ourselves to the powers described in the Constitution, and the moment we pass it, we take an arbitrary stride towards a despotic Government.”
    — James Jackson, First Congress, 1st Annals of Congress, 489

  • You talk about violent Conservative views? How about giving us a source for violent conservative ACTIONS?

I can give you many examples of Leftwing Liberal violent actions. Do you remember the violent mobs in Madison? You can talk to any of the Republican legislators, and that goes for not only the Senate but the Assembly, who received death threats against not only them but their families, including their small children. Many received death threats from a teacher in Green Bay. It was discovered who she was and she received a slap on the wrists. The leader of the Fleebaggers told a friend of mine who was in the Assembly that she was “f-ing dead! That is caught on tape. Another friend of mine had his sound equipment trashed. Did you see the union thug punching out that FOX guy? They all have vile filthy mouths and don’t belong among decent people!

To this day the “Liberal singers” at times throw open the doors to Republican offices and yell filth at them. These people are seriously deranged.

For you to buy into the wing-nut meme is crazy in itself because there is no evidence of it, only what your Liberal leaders have told you.

  • Well supporting this sort of thing which many on the right do seems rather violent to me:

Medical Marijuana prohibition is a crime against humanity and a violation of the religious precept – heal the sick.

  • Patriot

Yep, they just need to stand down and walk away or fight with Americans.

  • Patriot

It really is as simple as that! There really isn’t anything to think about!
