Harry Reid bails on assault weapons ban

Caricature of Harry ReidSen. Harry Reid has abandoned Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s assualt weapons ban amendment to a gun control bill moving through the Senate. The reason? Reid could not find many people that supported it.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday he will not include a renewal of the federal assault weapons ban in a Senate gun control bill because it could not win even 40 votes on the Senate floor.

“Right now her amendment using the most optimistic numbers has less than 40 votes,” Reid told reporters on Tuesday. “That’s not 60. I have to get something on the floor so we can have votes on that issue and the other issues we talked about.”

Reid indicated a proposal sponsored by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) to expand background checks to cover private gun sales would not make it in the base bill, either.

Reid knows that getting any of the proposed bills to the floor, as it were, means legislation can be processed through & “amendments added, “AFTER” the initial votes.
That means he can add Feinsteins onerous assault weapons ban, once the process is underway & after that intial vote that could require 60 votes, the amended version can get passed with just 51 votes. I suspect this is a typical Reid head fake, as he acts to get something, almost anything on the floor, so he can manipulate the process to get the incremental legislation designed to eventually disarm Americans entirely! I hate to say it, but w/ these folks, its all about brinksmanship & partisan game playing to get their way. They just want an initial piece of law that they can build on later on. That would then become the foundational bill many fear!
